Calatheas. This genus holds so many meanings to so many collectors.

That beautiful movement that characterizes the Marantaceae family is still there like with the Beauty Star — C. orbifolia will fold open its leaves to the light in the morning and then close them in the evening. If you’re not ready for the attention that a Beauty Star wants however, the Orbifolia is a bit more independent and won’t get quite as upset.

A consistently damp soil similar to ferns is best.  Avoid soggy soil  with regular small sips of water rather than a big drenching every now and again. Let your water sit out overnight beforehand or better yet use filtered water or even collect your own rainwater. City tap water, hard water or water high in flouride and salts is not going to get you very far with this one.

As a native to South America, the Calathea Orbifolia wants high humidity and a cozy temperature with no drafts (that means away from the heater or furnace). Put it next to other plants to help create a greenhouse effect. Pebble trays filled with water for it to sit on and humidifiers are also great. Temperatures should be consistent and warm for them. If you can trick them into thinking they’re back home in South America, you’re on the right track.
